Organizations for Translators and Interpreters


American Translators Association, the main organization for translators and interpreters in the United States. A must visit for all translators. The ATA has chapters which cover the major regions of the U.S., and they are listed below.

American Literary Translators Association (ALTA), a group that focuses on literary translation.

The American Association of Language Specialists (TAALS), a professional association that represents language specialists working at the international level, either at conferences or in permanent organizations, and determines their qualifications and standards.

Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR), an unfunded Federal interagency organization established for the coordination and sharing of information about language-related activities at the Federal level.

National Organization of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators (NAJIT), a non-profit organization dedicated to the furtherance of the court interpreting and legal translation profession.


Society of Translators and Interpreters of British Columbia, an organization with about 500 members working in 40+ languages in Western Canada.

Canadian Translators and Interpreters Council, recognized as the national body representing professional translators, interpreters and terminologists, contributes to high quality inter-language and intercultural communication.

Literary Translators' Association of Canada, seeks to promote literary translation and to protect the interests of its members throughout the country.


Japan Association of Translators (JAT), founded in 1985, is based in Japan but includes translators working between Japanese and English around the world.


La Asociación de Traductores e Intérpretes de Monterrey (atimac) is based in Monterrey, Mexico, and is for both translators and interpreters.


Globalization and Localization Association (GALA), a fully representative, non-profit, international industry association for the translation, internationalization, localization, and globalization industry.

AIIC, an organization which for 50 years, AIIC has represented professional conference interpreters worldwide and set standards for the practice of the profession.

International Federation of Translators (FIT), an international federation of associations of translators, interpreters and terminologists gathering more than 100 associations from all over the world.

LISA, the Localization Industry Standards Organization, which provides standards and other resources for the localization industry.

Degree Programs

Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) offers a M.A. in Translation, in Translation and Interpretation, and in Conference Interpretation. Located in California (US), the program includes Spanish, French, German, Russian, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese.

Kent State University offers an M.A. specializing in translation. Located in Ohio, the program offers French, German, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish, and also offers a doctorate (Ph.D.) in translation studies for Spanish, French, and German.

University of Washington, Seattle, offers a Technical Masters of Japanese. Located in Seattle, Washington (US), the program focuses on the translation of Japanese and English technical material and assumes a strong scientific or engineering background.

University of Wisconsin Madison offers a Master's of Engineering in Technical Japanese, a Certificate of Technical Japanese Studies, and other advanced language training.

Binghamton University (SUNY) offers TRIP, the Translation Research & Instruction Program, the only academic program in the U.S. to offer a doctorate in translation and related studies. Note that this program is for scholars, not individuals looking to develop skills as professional translators or interpreters.

Certificate Programs

Bellevue Community College offers has a Translation and Interpretation Certificate program. Located near Seattle, Washington (US), the program focuses on basic training and includes some language-specific coursework.

New York University offers certificate programs in translation, court interpreting, and medical interpreting, as well as certificate programs in a variety of major languages

University of California at San Diego (UCSD) Extension offers a Certificate Program for Spanish/English translation and interpretation.

University of Wisconsin Milwaukee offers a Graduate Certificate in Translation for French, German, and Spanish.

Miami Dade College offers, though its InterAmerican Campus, an Associates Degree and two certificate programs in translation and interpretation for English/Spanish and English/Hatian Creole.

The University of Denver, University College offers a Certificate of Translation that can be applied towards a Masters of Global Affairs.

University of Texasat Brownsville offers Certificate, AA, BA and MA degrees in Spanish translation and interpretation.

Job Hunting

Monster.com,the massive site that is actually world-wide, and contains listings for many tranlsation and language-related jobs, full-time and temporary. Change the "com" ending to the one for the country that interests you, for instance monster.fr or monster.ie, to hunt in a country besides the U.S.

Yahoo!, the major portal site for the world of the Web, contains listings for jobs across the United States, and if you head into the versions of Yahoo! for other countries, you'll find similar listings.
