This dictionary is a comprehensive and in-depth look at all the slang, vulgarisms, curses, and insults, plus idioms and expressions and a lot more, available in Japanese. Every effort has been made to keep it current and relevant, though of course older slang also remains in here for those who enjoy films, television, and books from years past. If you like anime or other modern Japanese entertainment or are planning to live, work, or travel in Japan, you'll find many of the words and phrases used in here. As always with slang, be careful using what you hear; it may not work quite the way you expect.

ハーフ
[はーふ, haafu] half-breed; a person of mixed (i.e. Japanese and non-Japanese) parentage (a standard word, though still possibly offensive or insulting)

ハーモニカ
[はーもにか, haamonika] cunnilingus (lit.: harmonica)

ハイオク
[はいおく, haioku] high octane gasoline

ぱいおつ
[ぱいおつ, paiotsu] breats; tits; boobs (variation of pai)

バイキング
[ばいきんぐ, baikingu] all-you-can-eat buffet

パイ爺
[ぱいじい, baijii] an old man who takes Viagra

売春婦
[ばいしゅんふ, baishunfu] prostitute (a popular term; also the legal term in Japanese)

ハイソ
[はいそ, haiso] high society (a shortened form); referes to the lifestyle of the rich and famous
売女
[ばいた, baita] whore (lit.: selling woman; n.b.: harsh, vulgar expression)

パイター
[ぱいたー, paitaa] ice cream on a stick

売人
[ばいにん, bainin] dealer; pusher (lit.: peddler)

バイブ
[ばいぶ, baibu] vibrator; dildo (from the English, abbreviated)

パイプ
[ぱいぷ, paipu] channels, official or otherwise

パイプカット
[ぱいぷかっと, paipu katto] vasectomy

バイブレータ
[ばいぶれーた, baibureeta] vibrator; dildo (from the English)

ハイミス
[はいみす, hamisu] older unmarried woman

ハウスミヌカン
[はうすみぬかん, hausu minukan] sales clerk in a fancy boutique clothing store

馬鹿
[ばか, baka] stupid, fool, idiot

歯が浮くようなお世辞
[はがうくようなおせじ, ha ga uku you na oseji] nauseating flattery

歯が利く
[はがきく, ha ga kiku] be of use

馬鹿くさい
[ばかくさい, baka-kusai] absurd, silly, stupid

馬鹿正直
[ばかしょうじき, baka shoujiki] excessively honest

歯が立たない
[はがたたない, ha ga tatanai] be beyond one’s ability

歯が立たぬ
[はがたたぬ, ha ga tatanu] beyond one’s power

歯が立つ
[はがたつ, ha ga tatsu] be able to do; make understand

馬鹿ちょん
[ばかちょん, baka-chon] foolproof, idiot-proof (n.b.: despite claims, baka-chon is not derogatory toward Koreans, but nonetheless this word is not often used anymore)

馬鹿丁寧
[ばかていねい, baka-teinei] polite to a fault; excessively polite (lit.: fool polite)

馬鹿との
[ばかとの, bakatono] an elite careerist with no common sense

馬鹿な一門
[ばかないちもん, bana na ichimon] idiot, twit, fool

馬鹿安
[ばかやす, baka-yasu] absurdly cheap, very inexpensive

ばかやろう
[ばかやろう, bakayarou] ass, asshole (strong vulgarism rarely used by women)

歯がゆい
[はがゆい, hagayui] irritated, impatient

馬鹿らしい
[ばからしい, baka-rashii] absurd, silly, stupid

馬鹿笑い
[ばかわらい, baka-warai] horse laugh (lit.: fool laugh)

馬鹿を言う
[ばかをいう, baka o iu] kid around; joke

はきはき
[はきはき, haki haki] briskly; cleanly; crisply

はげ
[はげ, hage] bald; Baldy

化け猫
[ばけねこ, bake-neko] refers to an older woman who uses a lot of makeup to appear young and attractive (lit.: ghost cat)

歯応えがする
[はごたえがする, hakotae ga suru] have opposition

はじき
[はじき, hajiki] pistol, gun, hand gun

梯子酒
[はしござけ, hashigo-zake] bar-hopping, pub-crawling

恥知らず
[はじしらず, haji-shirazu] shameless person (lit.: not knowing shame)

パジャマコール
[ぱじゃまこうる, pajama kooru] late-night phone call

蓮ッぱ
[はすっぱ, hasuppa] frivolous, flippant

蓮ッぱの女
[はすっぱのおんな, hasuppa no onna] unfaithful woman; loose woman

バストフィット
[ばすとふぃっと, basuto fitto] the way a bra fits

ばそ
[ばそ, baso] noodles (student slang; inverted from of ‘soba’)

ばそや
[ばそや, baso-ya] noodle restaurant (student slang; inverted from of ‘soba-ya’)

畑違い
[はたけちがい, hatake chigai] refers to children of the same father but different mother

旗日
[はたび, hatabi] menstruation; period (lit.: flag day)

ばたや
[ばたや, bataya] people who live by scavenging

働き蟻
[はたらきあり, hataraki-ari] hard worker

働き蜂
[はたらきばち, hataraki-bachi] hard worker

ぱちぱち
[ぱちぱち, pachi pachi] crackly, snap

パチプロ
[ぱちぷろ, pachi puro] professional pachinko player

パチモン
[ぱちもん, pachimon] cheap knockoffs of famous brands

八文字を踏む
[はちもんじをふむ, hachimonji o fumu] walk parrot-toed

罰一
[ばついち, batsu-ichi] a man or woman who divorced one time

ばっかり食べ
[ばっかりたべ, bakkari tabe] eating only one thing at a time

バックシャン
[ばっくしゃんばっくしゃん, bakku shan] used to describe a woman who looks beautiful only from the back

ばつぐん
[ばつぐん, batsugun] outstanding

ばったや
[ばったや, battaya] fence; someone who sells stolen goods at low prices (lit.: batta [grasshopper] + ya [person])

バッチグー
[ばっちぐー, bacchiguu] very good; excellent; spot on (abbreviated form)

八方美人
[はっぽうびじん, happou bijin] one who shows people what they want to see

八方塞がり
[はっぽうふさがり, happou fusagari] cornered; embattled on all sides

初耳
[はつみみ, hatsumimi] haven't heard that before; that's news to me (lit.: first ear)

派手好み
[はでごのみ, hade-gonomi] showy, expressive person (lit.: someone who likes a showy, dramatic style)

派手好き
[はでずき, hade-zuki] showy, expressive person (lit.: someone who likes a showy, dramatic style)

派手にやる
[はでにやる, hade ni yaru] be excessive; be extravagant

パない
[ぱない, panai] excellent; good; great (abbreviated form)

鼻が開く
[はながあく, hana ga aku] be amazed; be bemused

鼻が高い
[はながたかい, hana ga takai] be proud

[はなきん, hana-kin] happy Friday; TGIF (lit.: flowery Friday, when young men and others would stay out until the last trains headed in for the night)

[はなつまみ, hanatsumami] disgusting fellow (can be used as a euphemism for yakuza)

バナナ
[ばなな, banana] penis (lit.: banana)

鼻につく
[はなにつく, hana ni tsuku] be disgusted with; it stinks; stick in one's craw

花の給料日
[はなのきゅうりょうび, hana no kyuuryoubi] payday (lit.: flowery payday, when young men and others would stay out until the last trains headed in for the night)

鼻の先であしらう
[はなのさきであしらう, hana no saki de ashirau] turn up one’s nose; treat in a haughty manner

鼻の下
[はなのした, hana no shita] the mouth

鼻の下が長い
[はなのしたがながい, hana no shita ga nagai] be infatuated

[はなのじゅうはっさい, hana no juuhassai] blossoming 18-year-old girl (lit.: 18 year flower)

[はなぺちゃ, hanapecha] flat-nosed (person) (from ‘hana’ [nose] and ‘pechanko’ [flattened])

[はなをおる, hana o oru] humiliate

花を咲かせる
[はなをさかせる, hana o sakaseru] have fun talking about something

鼻を高める
[はなをたかめる, hana o takameru] be proud; be boastful

花を摘む
[はなをつむ, hana o tsumu] peeing or pooping in the woods (used by women)

花を持たせる
[はなをもたせる, hana o motaseru] let someone have/take the credit for

歯に合わない
[はにあわない, ha ni awanai] be unsuitable

歯に絹着せない
[はにきぬきせない, ha ni kinusenai] speak frankly

歯の浮くようなお世辞
[はのうくようなおせじ, ha no uku you na oseji] nauseating flattery

歯の根が合わない
[はのねがあわない, ha no ne ga awanai] have one’s teeth chatter with fear

馬糞
[ばふん, bafun] horseshit

蛤
[はまぐり, hamaguri] vagina of an older woman (lit.: clam)

[はめはめする, hame-hame suru] fuck

[ぱらさいとしんぐる, parasaito shinguru] a single person who earns enough to live alone but prefers to live rent-free with his or her parents

[はらだち, haradachi] anger
